Woman and Migration in A Doll’s House
Helmer does not hold himself responsible with bringing wickedness since he is the reason why Nora attempts to pay the debt.
Migration happens when creatures try to find places with better conditions in order to settle down and continue their life in healthy and good circumstances. Even plants crave for migration as well as people and animals since they die away when they can’t meet good or the best circumstances that are necessary for them to live. Animals migrate to warmer places or to the places which are more suitable for their life cycle and resemble their habitats as the weather changes throughout the year, and people on the other hand migrate in order to live in better places than their hometowns.
In a Doll’s house, Nora aims to find a better place as well, where people don’t treat her as a doll or do not try to manipulate her and as if she is something super fragile that anything may can break her into pieces. Even though she started as a fan of these ideas, in the end she does not support these acts and ideas thus she wants to explore somewhere else by leaving everything behind, everything that belonging to the past she did not enjoy her so she plans to migrate somewhere else that is better in order to feel well. She loves and admires Helmer’s love, actions and words, but after meeting Mr Linde, who fought for her life and left love away in order to make a living, she starts to change her ideas and points out the importance of herself, the women in society, the role they have. She helps Helmer to get rid of his debt and thinks she did something great by rescuing her husband, but since such an act done by women is not accepted by society everything gets ruined. Her husband accuses her with bringing wickedness into the house and haunting children and the family, meanwhile Helmer does not hold himself responsible with bringing wickedness since he is the reason why Nora attempts to pay the debt. Nora does not see herself as someone who caused the damnation of her house, but sees herself as a saviour. She does not bear such accusations and titles so she decides on to leave everything behind because she couldn’t find and get the appreciation she wanted to get. Thus she decides on to leave her house, migrate somewhere else to feel happier, educate and improve herself because she thinks as long as she stays with Helmer, she couldn’t get the education she needs, because as a man, Helmer is going to feel the responsibility to carry all the weight and won’t let Nora to do anything or bear anything since she is a woman and this action is not accepted by the society they are leaving in. These all cause Nora to leave her house, her family, her past, she aims to get rid of the things holding her back from reaching her purposes just like the animals and plants that feel the need to migrate to other lands which have the living conditions they need.
